Work Study Positions

The work study program is designed to provide work opportunities to full-time post-secondary or post-diploma students with a demonstrated financial need.

If you are a Fanshawe student, and want to work for the Fanshawe Student Union, the first step is to fill out a Work Study application. Type work study in the first field and click the Search button. A description of Work Study will appear below. Click on the Apply link below this description to fill out the application.

Once you have filled out the form and been approved, email Amy Romao (FSU Administrative Support - Services) at the position you are interested in, along with your resume and work study approval letter. Resumes can also be dropped off in person in room SC 2001 in the Student Centre.

The FSU currently has the following work study positions available:

Conference Assistant - Music/Orientation Coordinator

Work Assignment Duties:

  • May - mid-July - Assist with data-entry & general admin duties for a campus activities conference in London.
  • Mid-July - August - Assist with the registration and organization of FSU Orientation including the Orientation kits.
  • Must be available for two weekends of work during the month of June.
  • This job is centered around campus activities and entertainment.

Required Qualities:

  • Must be comfortable phoning student unions and campus suppliers across Canada.
  • Good customer-service and general computer skills required (e.g. MS Office including Excel).
  • Some graphic design and knowledge of entertainment an asset but not required.
  • Organized, task-oriented and willing to take bus (or drive) to off-campus conference office.
  • Successful candidate is energetic and works well both within a group, and independently.

Work Assignment Duties: Preparation and cooking of food, associated cleaning and recordkeeping responsibilities.

Required Qualities:

  • Interest in cooking; preference given to students in related programs.
  • Working understanding of Safe Food Handling practices.
  • Energetic and able to take direction.

Food and Beverage Server - The Out Back Shack

Work Assignment Duties:

  • To determine, meet, and exceed the guest’s expectations for food, atmosphere and service delivery.
  • To ensure each and every guest dining experience is a positive one.
  • Treat each and every guest the way that you want to be treated.
  • Follow all the steps of service as outlined in the OBS server standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized section.
  • Demonstrate responsible liquor service.
  • Opening and closing duties as per OBS systems.
  • Make your section and yourself look open and ready for business.
  • Other duties as outlined by the Manager on Duty to ensure a positive dining experience.

Required Qualities
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skills in verbal communication required dealing with customers and others within the organization.
  • Must have organizational skills.
  • Background in customer service oriented industry.
  • Professional demeanor.

Effort & Responsibility

  • Ability to make decisions quickly in a fast-paced environment, ensuring excellent customer service.
  • Responsible for dealing with large amounts of cash.

Training and Experience

  • Training and experience with cash procedures, preferably in a computerized atmosphere.
  • Past bar/restaurant experience preferred
  • Experience in campus environment preferred
  • Some computer experience an asset


  • P.O.S. system, audio equipment, coffee machines glass and plate ware.

Restaurant General Labourer

Work Assignment Duties:

  • Cook, clean, serve, wash dishes.
  • May assist the Hospitality Department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to work independently under minimum supervision and work with a team.
  • Organized and willing to take on challenges.
  • Must be trustworthy and able to work some late nights and weekends.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Good communication skills.

Video Reporter/On Screen Personality

Work Assignment Duties:

  • Produce video news content for and Interrobang.
  • Ability to do own camera work and editing an asset, however, you may also be teamed with an FSU videographer.
  • Write various news items and stories for the Interrobang newspaper as needed.

Required Qualities

  • Must have a firm grasp of the English language and the ability to write in a coherent understandable manner.
  • Must be expected to follow instructions as well as to exercise creative freedom independently.
  • Must be outgoing, task oriented and able to work with limited supervision.
