FSU President - Joe Scalia
Home > Student Council and Staff > FSU President - Joe Scalia
Im Joe Scalia,
I like movies, music, red wine, and my tastes in all three fall all over the spectrum. I watch The Daily Show, Colbert Report, and
South Park frequently. My dream job would be editing movies or music videos. My worst habit is cracking my knuckles. I hate
sushi. Im a proud son of Windsor but London has become a second home to me.
Im the Fanshawe Student Union President for 10/11 and your direct voice to the College. This year I speak
for the collective students of Fanshawe College on all College committees and councils. Any issue you have with
the College or Student Union can be brought forward to me in person, over the phone, or through email. My position is
full-time so I am no longer a student.
I came to this College in 2005 and took General Arts and Sciences. I didnt do very well, so I took a year off to
work and try and figure myself out. I returned to the College in 2007 to take Television Broadcasting and it was
then that I took up an opportunity to work for the Fanshawe Student Union as a custodian.
From there I secured a summer job at FSU as a videographer and enjoyed every minute of it. After making videos
highlighting the services and student reps of the FSU I wanted to be a bigger part of the organization. I ran for VP
Finance, lost, and went back to custodial work until I had the chance to run again. I was elected VP Finance in my 2nd
year of Television Broadcasting and served out my term in 09/10 while taking the Digital Post Production grad program.
In 09/10 I was also elected to the board of the College Student Alliance, our provincial affiliation. CSA is the
biggest collective voice in Ontario for College students, and we advocate for three main issues: Accessibility, affordability, and an
effective credit transfer system between Colleges and Universities. I served as the Southwest Regional Director, representing six
student associations in the region, from Windsor to Niagara.
Thats been my life so far at Fanshawe. Every year has been bigger than the last so 10/11 is set to be the
biggest yet. Ive got a lot planned this year but I want to hear what students want, because my VPs and I take our
direction from you. Tell us about the issues that youre concerned about, or go one further and take action as a
class or division rep.
The actions you take in your post-secondary life will only help you later in life, so please take action and
become more than a seat in a classroom. The opportunities here are truly endless. This college is a community and it
needs good people like yourself to give back and make change for the students of today and tomorrow.
