Winning through the eye of a lens

Do you enjoy capturing beauty in a way that is only explainable through photographic art?

Whether you are a photography student or an amateur who has an eye for a good shot and would like an opportunity for others to view your excellence, why not submit a photograph to an annual photography contest?

“Each year Ontario Colleges produces a calendar that is sent to government and business partners,” said Public Relations and Events Coordinator Heather Howe. “A theme is selected for each calendar and we decided that a photo contest would be an interesting way to illustrate the creativity and ingenuity found throughout the province's college system and amongst college students.”

Although submissions were accepted as of October 6 for judging, the contest will be running through to November 15, 2008.

“Any student enrolled in a course at any of the 24 colleges is eligible to submit a photo,” said Howe. “This is the first year that we've done a contest of this type, but we've already started to receive photos.”

The calendar is going to showcase beautiful art that will be chosen by a “selection committee made up of individuals from the visual arts community.”

According to Howe, of those 12 winners, an additional prize will be awarded to one of the winning students based on the results of a people's choice vote at the 2009 Conference.

Each photo will represent a particular month by a different artist and each of the 12 winning students will receive an iPod Touch.

“We are also going to exhibit the 12 winning photos at the Colleges Ontario 2009 Conference and will allow attendees to vote on their favourite photo,” explained Howe. “The photo that is chosen at the conference will be reproduced as the Colleges Ontario holiday card and be the image for December. The student who took this photo will receive an additional $100 iTunes gift certificate,” said Howe.

Students are highly encouraged to submit one photo for a chance of a lifetime.

Each photo has the potential of becoming a winner and being showcased for art lovers at the 2009 conference.

According to Howe, students can get more information about the contest and can submit their photo at: www.co-youarehere.org.
