Building a better future for Mexico

Ivana Pelisek | Interrobang | News | February 9th, 2009

You can make a big difference this Spring Break by building a home in Mexico

Homes of Hope have been helping build homes for deserving families in the Northern Baja region of Mexico since its inception in October 1991.

Now, they're seeking your help.

Having partnered with Youth with a Mission (YWAM) four kindhearted individuals from Fanshawe College are eagerly awaiting their trip to Baja Mexico with high hopes of helping those less fortunate.

Tonya Bednarz, a weekend Manager at the Oasis at Fanshawe College is the organizer for what will initially make all the difference for a family who struggles with meeting the basic necessities of life.

“We have four people going so far and about 10 is needed to build the home,” said Bednarz.

“If we don't get a big group then we will go and finish up other homes that other teams didn't get a chance to finish ...we will also be doing outreach in the community.”

According to Bednarz, this event is the first to take place-involving people from Fanshawe, with everyone hoping it will become an annual event.

Homes of Hope is a ministry of YWAM where the organizations join forces to built homes for the poorest of the poor in the Baja region.

The ministry allows for groups to come in for short-term missions to bless a family in need. Basic materials are gathered before each team of 10 arrives in Mexico to help jump-start their mission by completing a home for a family.

Each family is picked by the organization allowing the teams to meet with them upon completion of the built homes, Bednarz mentioned.

Helping out the less fortunate should be on top of everyone's priority list.

“My main goal and I think everyone's main goal is to make a difference in someone's life ...to give back because sometimes we don't realize how much we actually have,” Bednarz said. “The house we are building is one room with one window and one door.”

Ryan McTavish, Oasis Manager at Fanshawe, is teaming up with Brian Harness (Turbo) by organizing a chili day (date to be announced) to help raise much-needed funds for building a home in Mexico.

If anyone is interested in joining the group for a trip to Mexico to help out a family in need, just drop by the Oasis and speak directly with Tonya, as she would love for more people to get involved.

According to it's website, by August of 2006, Homes of Hope had placed 2,000 families in homes in the Baja region with additional homes being built by other YWAM entities in the cities of Guadalajara, Juarez, Cancun, Mazatlan, and Culiacan.

To date there are approximately 60,000 volunteers from Canada and USA who kindly dedicate their time and efforts ensuring those less fortunate have a place to call home.
