Jerry Thomas, FSU President:
“As a student myself, I saw many of my peers struggling to balance school, rent, groceries, and other expenses while trying to improve their chances of finding part-time work. I noticed that students were paying for certifications like Smart Serve, Food Handling, and Security Licensing on their own, often at a significant cost. Seeing similar programs offered by other student unions at Ontario colleges, I made it a platform of mine to bring this initiative to Fanshawe.
This partnership allows us to provide these certifications at a subsidized rate, helping students reduce financial barriers while gaining practical skills. With youth unemployment in Ontario often higher than the general rate, being job-ready during and after school can make a real difference in securing part-time work and building meaningful career experience. My goal with this initiative has always been to ensure that both international and domestic students have the support and resources they need to succeed academically and professionally.“
