Free Tax Clinics: Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)

Who can use this service

Current Fanshawe College students who have a modest income and simple tax situation, as defined at this link under the Eligibility Criteria section.

If you have a complex tax situation which includes filing for the newcomer benefit, childcare benefits, business income, rental income or foreign income, please go to fsu.ca/financial-literacy for other tax clinic options.

What you need to bring

  • Fanshawe Student card
  • T4 for employment income
  • Rent receipts and amount of rent paid during the 2024 year
  • Tuition certificate T2202 (from Fanshawe and other post-secondary institutions for 2024)
  • T4A for other sources of income (taxable portion of RESP withdrawals, any taxable scholarships/grants received, pension income, CPP/OAS/EI benefits received etc.)
  • T5 slips for interest income received (i.e. from a savings account)
  • RRSP slips for RRSP contributions; T4RSP slips for RRSP withdrawals
  • Prior year’s Notice of Assessment or copy of tax return
  • Current address, current full name, SIN number. International students without a work permit need to provide their ITN # and international students with a work permit need to provide their SIN #.
  • If you have spouses/dependants we will need the SIN number, birthday, and net income figure of your spouse and dependants
  • If you are a Fanshawe student and would like to file your spouse’s return with yours, your spouse needs to be present for us to file their return.
  • Any other tax documentation you have received

Your tax return cannot be done at this clinic if

  • You do not have a SIN number (or an ITN, if no SIN)
  • You have any foreign income, rental income, investment or business income during 2024
  • You want to file a tax return for 2023 or prior years (we only do 2024)
  • You have income of over $35,000 during the year (if single), or over $45,000 combined (if a couple). Please note, we cannot file your spouse’s return if they are not present. No exceptions.
  • You paid rent to a landlord in 2024 and want to claim credits for rent on your tax return, but you do not have any rent receipts from your landlord. We will only claim rent credits for you if you have rent receipts to support your claim. If you do not have rent receipts but want to claim your rent payments, you will need to go elsewhere to get your taxes filed.
  • You have claimed bankruptcy during the year
  • You want to claim the newcomer bonus as we cannot advise on this matter

Pricing

  • $35.00 including tax for one T220. This includes applying for the Newcomer bonus and other tax benefits.
  • $40.00 including tax for one T220 and one T4. This includes applying for newcomer bonus and other tax benefits.

What you need to bring

Your tax return can only be completed properly if you bring all the necessary documentation with you to the tax clinic. The following information will help you prepare for having your return completed.

  • Your social insurance number (SIN), current address, current full name
  • International students without a work permit need to provide their ITN # and international students with a work permit need to provide their SIN #
  • A list of your dependents, their exact dates of birth, and their SINs, if applicable
  • A copy of your last year’s income tax return or volunteer summary, and your Notice of Assessment

Information slips

  • T4 - Salary and wages
  • T4A, T5, T3 - Pension, annuity, investment income (i.e. Canada/Ontario savings bonds)
  • T4A(OAS) - Old Age Security/ Guaranteed Income Supplement or spouse’s allowance
  • T4A(P) - Canada Pension Plan
  • T4RSP, T4RIF Registered Retirement Savings Plan/Registered Retirement Income Fund
  • T4E - Employment Insurance benefits
  • T5007 - Social Assistance payments/ Worker’s Compensation benefits
  • RC62 - Universal Child Care Benefit
  • If you received a lump-sum payment, bring the breakdown statement from the payor

Receipts for expenses and credits

  • Childcare expenses and a completed T778, if you have one
  • Union dues (for amounts that are not reported on your T4 slip)
  • Tuition fees and education amount (T2202)
  • Medical expenses (add up all of the receipts)
  • Charitable/political donations (add up all of the receipts)
  • All property taxes or rent (add up all of the receipts)

Other

  • Details of spouse’s and dependent’s income
  • Date of arrival to Canada and status (if a new immigrant)
  • Proof of payment to non-resident dependents
  • Direct deposit information (void cheque/letter from the bank/credit union with your bank information)
  • Any other documentation that may pertain to your income taxes

Note: This list may not be all inclusive so ensure you have all your income slips, documents and receipts when you attend the clinic.
